With fashion month entirely in the rearview mirror, we had the opportunity to digest the many trends we saw on the Spring 2023 catwalks. During Fashion Weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris, there were plenty to soak up for the coming season, including a range of modern takes on classic silhouettes and styles. The 1980s are back in full force, as seen at Saint Laurent, where models in hooded jumpsuits and larger-than-life shouldered leather jackets channeled the inimitable Grace Jones. Black, whether a color of mourning after the death of Queen Elizabeth II at Richard Quinn or an image of chic at Chanel, was everywhere. And the proof that this latest trend has already gone from the catwalks to the red carpet appeared on Saturday October 15 at the Academy Museum gala: Taylor Russell, Alexa Demie and Jurnee Smollett all wore looks from the latest creations by Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton. collections in the dark shade. Big Pants
Loose, oversized pants have been a celebrity trend for months now, with the likes of Rihanna and Bella Hadid leading the way. As seen above, Bottega Veneta and Willy Chavarria made their big pants two ways: the second, as an homage to ’90s grunge, and the first, with a riff on sportswear.
heavy cargo
Roomy pockets shaped on trousers have become a must, especially in light of the advent of the mini bag. Tiny purses that fit little more than a credit card and lip gloss call for other places to put your things. At Prada and Louis Vuitton, clutches were affixed to skirts like fanny packs, while Fendi and Sacai made riffs on more traditional cargo pants.
Column dressing
Old Hollywood, you’ve met your match. The new version of a column dress is sharp, finely tailored and features surprising elements (see: the gathered drop waist on the version from Standing Ground).
Fringe
One of the most popular trends picking up from Fall 2022 is bangs: a fun textural element that’s been seen at nearly every runway this season. Our favorites were at Proenza Schouler, Jil Sander, Alexander McQueen and Bottega Veneta.
The Grace Jones Effect
Grace Jones may have walked the red carpet for the first time in months to attend the At daggers drawn: glass onion premiered in London last weekend, but the legendary musician and muse has been serving looks for decades and decades. Designers such as Saint Laurent and Alaïa have taken note of his heritage, incorporating his signature hood into their spring 2023 collections.
Greek glamor
Ethereal dresses inspired by Greek gods and goddesses are nothing new in fashion. But this season, draping took on a higher twist: At Saint Laurent, navel cutouts gave the look an early feel, while Loewe used layers on designer Jonathan Anderson’s take to set it apart from the pack.
The new white shirt
Whether or not these white shirts replace your go-to shirt now that you’re heading back to the office is a moot point. They are fabulous in themselves.
Spottie Dottie
Sober (Burberry) or all-over and out-there (Saint Laurent), the polka dot has imposed itself on many catwalks this season. We were personally very impressed with Marni’s version, which evoked a 90s lava lamp feel.
Preparatory School
This is not your typical Blair Waldorf-approved prep approach. Designers have upgraded traditionally chic looks for Spring 2023, increasing volume and length while adding unique accessories to the mix.
A rosette by any other name
If you’re looking to give spring a floral touch, here’s your chance: adding a rosette of any size will give your look a romantic and whimsical touch.
Honey, I shrunk the jackets
Whether short, three-quarter sleeve or both, the little jacket has been a hit for the coming season. At Balenciaga, Demna made her version in candy apple down; Coperni was a riff on the classic pea coat.
Watercolor
Bob Ross, devour your heart. This season’s vivid hues have taken on a watery feel, blending like a sunset or a lakeside scene in a painting.
